Online courses under scrutiny

Hoping to avoid a showdown with lawmakers, the state Board of Education convened its own task force on Monday to recommend changes to online education following a scathing state audit that criticized some programs for being poorly supervised and ineffective. Joe Shea, who heads a company that provides online schools for school districts, said online courses are the best way to help students who are struggling academically, but he said those courses need to be closely monitored. Shea said students should be evaluated before they are allowed to take their courses from the Internet and it should only be a temporary solution to help students get back on track. Online should not be used as a replacement for schools, he told a bi-partisan panel that included Internet entrepreneurs, lawmakers and educators.A final option Dave Grosche, superintendent of Edison 54 JT Schools in El Paso County, said online courses are often the final option before a student drops out....

State should cast cautious eye toward online schools

Surrounded by cornfields, a school has quietly grown on the northern outskirts of Greeley the past two years. New Hope Academy started as K-8 with 69 students and has mushroomed to 116 students in grades K-12. But now that its sponsoring entities -- the Vilas Re-5 School District and Hope Online Learning Academy Co-Op -- are landing in the media spotlight, as well as drawing scrutiny from state legislators, things aren't quiet any longer. And for good reason. In just two years, Hope Online Learning Co-Ops grew from 1,500 students in 38 learning centers to this fall's 3,700 students in 81 centers. They are called "centers" because they aren't schools in the sense that they hire licensed teachers. The mentors at Hope Centers, of which New Hope Academy in Greeley was among the first, need only an associate's degree....

_ A total of 171 cases of verbal or physical attacks directed at Korean schools and their students have been reported across Japan since North Korea test-fired ballistic missiles on July 5, a pro-Pyongyang group said Tuesday. The General Association of Korean Residents in Japan, known as Chongryon, said that Korean schools have reported 120 cases of such attacks from July to Oct. 2 and another 51 cases since Oct. 3, when North Korea announced it would conduct a nuclear test. Incidences of harassment include violence against students, an incident in which a school's musical instruments were dumped at its athletic field in Yamaguchi Prefecture, and another case in which a post on an online message board of a Tokyo school read, "Sanctions to nukes, eye for an eye." North Korea launched a long-range Taepodong-2 missile believed to be capable of reaching the United States, along with six shorter-range missiles on July 5, and conducted an underground nuclear test on Oct....

'Jamie effect' is blamed for school dinners drop
Posted Monday, November 06, 2006 1:36:16 PM by Blog57 Team
Efforts to get children to eat healthier school meals may have prompted a drop in the number of pupils taking them at all, it was claimed today. A survey for BBC News found that schools cited drives including celebrity chef Jamie Oliver's campaign for a fall in the number of children taking school dinners this term amid new, more nutritious menus. BBC News said that of 59 authorities which responded to the survey, in more than half - 35 areas - the number had gone down. Of those, 71 per cent believed Jamie Oliver's campaign was a reason, BBC News Online reported. Six areas said that they had more pupils taking meals while eight reported no change and 10 said the changes were not applicable. Two-thirds said children did not like the new menus....

New York City Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein joined BrainPOP Chief Operating Officer Michael Salort and I.S. 93 Principal George Foley at I.S. 93 Ridgewood Intermediate School in Queens today to announce "Take Your Parents to Vote Day," a new online movie-short produced by BrainPOP, a producer of animated films for elementary and middle school students. Chancellor Klein and Russell Simmons, the president and founder of Phat Farm Clothing, are the stars of the cartoon, which urges students in New York City and around the country to vote on Tuesday, November 7. The six-minute movie is available free online at www.brainpop.com. A Spanish version is available at http://es.brainpop.com. "Participation, not observation, is what makes our democracy tick," Chancellor Klein said. "I urge all New Yorkers, particularly young voters, to take a stand this Tuesday and exercise one of their most critical rights and responsibilities." "The suggestion to create a movie about voting actually came from one of our users, a child who was curious about the current news coverage revolving around the mid-term elections," said Mr....

MILWAUKEE -- Attacks against staff members at Milwaukee high schools are raising new questions about how to stop the violence. A teacher was assaulted -- while class was in session -- by a student wearing a ski mask earlier this week at Madison High School on the city's northwest side, 12 News reported. It was the second attack on a faculty member at that school in the past month. Since those events, the Milwaukee School Board has approved spending an extra $1 million on security. The question now is: Should armed police be assigned to schools? ....
