San Jose's Smith looks forward to music gigs

SAN JOSE -- To help promote the upcoming release of their debut album, Mark Smith and his band have two gigs in San Francisco booked, including a date at the legendary Fillmore in March. The Talking Trees are also playing tonight at the Red Devil Lounge, which is on the corner of Polk and Clay. Showtime is 7 p.m. They are also scheduled to perform in the Fillmore's Poster Room on March 26 when The Tragically Hip will be the main act. "I'm a little nervous about that, but I'm pretty pumped up too," Smith said. Ryane Clowe and Mark Bell list the Tragically Hip, a 2005 inductee into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, as their favorite musical act. Smith is hoping that the album, titled Pura Vida, will be ready for release by the end of February....

Napster to Provide Service for AOL Music

AOL, a unit of Time Warner Inc., said Friday that online music retailer Napster Inc. will become the exclusive music subscription provider for AOL Music, replacing its AOL Music Now service. The company said about 350,000 Music Now subscribers will be transferred to Napster's digital music subscription service -- unless they decide to opt out -- and that it will post links to Napster throughout AOL Music. Napster said it will recreate the customers' existing personal Music Now music libraries, including any original playlists they have created. It will also save and keep Music Now's current pricing tiers for migrating subscribers and transfer any prepaid track credits they have in their accounts. The service transfer is expected to be complete within the next 60 days. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed....

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Napster Inc. (NASDAQ:NAPS) said Wednesday its second-quarter loss narrowed from a year ago, beating Wall Street estimates, as the online music service saw a boost in revenue. The company, which said in September it is exploring a possible sale, reported a net loss of US$9 million, or 21 cents per share, for the fiscal quarter ended Sept. 30. That compared to a loss of $13.6 million, or 32 cents per share, during the same period a year ago. Net revenue was $25.5 million, up nine per cent from $23.4 million last year. Excluding a nonrecurring item, revenue for the quarter was $24.9 million, the company said. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial expected a quarterly loss of 27 cents per share on sales of $25.5 million in the latest period....

Cingular Gets Music From XM, Yahoo, Napster

Wireless phone company Cingular announced Friday a new music service that brings together songs from two popular online sites and a satellite radio provider. Cingular Music will allow people to listen to music from Yahoo, Napster, eMusic and XM Satellite Radio on their phones. "Cingular Music is our answer to a fragmented marketplace that until now has not fully taken into account the user experience," said Jim Ryan, vice president of consumer data services. "We are offering our customers one-click access to their music, their way." To get music from Napster, customers need a $14.95 monthly subscription. That allows unlimited music to be downloaded and played, so long as the subscription is current. Cingular said new users can get a free, 60-day trial of the service....
