| | | Vivendi Third-Quarter Sales Climb 0.3% on Games, TV (Update1) | | Posted Tuesday, November 07, 2006 11:22:52 AM by Blog57 Team | | Nov. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Vivendi SA, owner of the world's largest music company, said third-quarter sales rose 0.3 percent as it added subscribers for online games and pay-television channels. Revenue slipped in Vivendi's two largest units. Sales rose to 4.89 billion euros ($6.2 billion) from 4.87 billion euros a year earlier, Vivendi said in a statement today. Sales were estimated to rise 1.8 percent to 4.96 billion euros, the median estimate of 11 analysts in a Bloomberg News survey. Vivendi said Nov. 4 a ``friendly'' approach from buyout firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., which included keeping the company's assets together, didn't result in a bid. Higher third- quarter revenue from games and pay-TV helped make up for a decline in revenue from Vivendi's music and mobile-phone units.... | |

| | | Online games retailer goes out of business | | Posted Thursday, November 02, 2006 1:29:52 PM by Blog57 Team | | Gadget etailer Lik-Sang.com has been forced to shut down following a London High Court ruling last week that it was illegally importing Sony's PSP consolesfrom Asia to Europe. The Hong Kong-based firm, one of several retailers exploiting regional differences in games console launch times, issued a statement saying that it will not be in the position to accept any new orders and will cancel and refund all existing orders that have already been placed. Sony denied responsibility for the closure in aresponse carried by Gamesindustry.biz. Lik-Sang did not contest this case (i.e. they did not turn up and therefore incurred no legal costs). We have been awarded substantial costs against Lik-Sang which have not been paid. We would therefore strongly deny that our actions have had anything to do with this website closing." In its statement, Lik-Sangwent on to claim thatseveral Sony executives had used its site to import products.... | |

| | | Online Gambling Doubles as U.K. Seeks 32-Nation Code of Conduct | | Posted Tuesday, October 31, 2006 7:07:48 PM by Blog57 Team | | Oct. 31 (Bloomberg) -- Online gambling more than doubled in the U.K. during the past five years, a study for the government showed as Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell negotiated a code of conduct for the industry with 32 nations. The research by RSe Consulting found about 1 million people place bets regularly online in the U.K., a third of the 3.3 million across Europe. The industry takes bets of 3.5 billion pounds ($6.65 billion) a year, with the average bet 1,000 pounds. The figures help build Britain's case to regulate online gaming instead of banning it as U.S. President George W. Bush is doing. Today outside London, Jowell aims to agree with other nations principles to guide regulation of gaming on the Internet. ``Online gambling is on the rise, and there is a need to do something about this at a global level,'' Jowell said in an emailed statement.... | |
