| Online courses gaining popularity | | Posted Monday, March 12, 2007 3:07:36 PM by Blog57 Team | | During the past decade, the University has tried its hand at online classes through its Distance Education program. But as the classes' popularity grew, the program struggled to offer enough courses to meet an increasing demand, said University Continuation Center Director Sandra Gladney. The reason, she said, partly stems from a lack of faculty available to teach the classes. "You need to have instructors to teach courses. A lot of our faculty are involved in research or other commitments," Gladney said. "There's a learning curve. For some of them, making that transition is just too big of a burden with their workload." Many professors teaching an online course for the first time must adjust to finding new ways to connect personally with students, and to reformatting assignments to fit the digital realm, Gladney said.... | |

| | | Number of students taking online courses rises | | Posted Monday, November 13, 2006 11:10:05 PM by Blog57 Team | | Roughly one in six students enrolled in higher education -- about 3.2 million people -- took at least one online course last fall, a sharp increase defying predictions that online learning growth is leveling off. A new report scheduled for released Thursday by The Sloan Consortium, a group of colleges pursuing online programs, estimates that 850,000 more students took online courses in the fall of 2005 than the year before, an increase of nearly 40 percent. Last year, the group had reported slowing growth, prompting speculation the trend had hit a ceiling. "The growth was phenomenal," said Jeff Seaman, Sloan's CIO and survey director, who also serves as co-director of the Babson College survey research group. "It's higher in absolute numbers and higher in percentages than anything we've measured before.... | |

| | | College students click on online courses | | Posted Saturday, November 11, 2006 3:27:16 PM by Blog57 Team | | The number of U.S. college students taking at least one online course surged 35% last year, amid growing concerns among faculty, according to a survey by the College Board and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. More than 3.1 million students took at least one online course during the fall 2005 term, or about 17% of all U.S. college students, up from 2.3 million the previous year, the groups said in an annual report. "Online enrollments have been growing substantially faster than the overall higher education student body," said the report, based on responses from chief academic officers at more than 2,200 U.S. colleges and universities. At the same time, fewer of the administrators at both public and private colleges said their faculty "accept the value and legitimacy of online education," raising a critical obstacle for a method of making college more affordable and more accessible to nontraditional students, the report said.... | |

| | | Eco Groups Use Online Maps in Mine Fight | | Posted Tuesday, November 07, 2006 3:18:27 AM by Blog57 Team | | Vicco, KY -- Benny Campbell experiences mountaintop mining day and night. His bed is rattled by the blasting. Gray dust blankets his porch and car if a few days go by without rain. His electricity goes out repeatedly when the coal miners accidentally knock down power lines. But the worst thing of all, he says, is that the mountain peaks that once loomed over his lifelong eastern Kentucky home have been flattened by dynamite and bulldozers. "When I was young, it was a really pretty place," said Campbell, 53, who lives in a hollow called Bull Creek near Vicco. "Now it's just a rock pile. You can't do nothing with it." Now environmentalists have found a way to let the rest of the world see what mountaintop coal mining has done to Appalachia: They have started a Web site that uses the Google Earth database to enable people to see aerial reconnaissance photos of the scarred countryside.... | |
