PRINCETON -- About 1 million books in Princeton University's collection will be made available online through Google Inc.'s book-scanning project, the school announced Monday. The university library will work with Google's Book Search Library Project over the next six years to digitize books that are a part of the public domain and no longer under copyright, according to a school news release. ....

The best business books of 2006

Here's a look at the business book candidates from 2006 that merit permanent inclusion in your library. BY RICHARD PACHTER rap@WordsOnWords.com I'm amazed that despite the latest high-tech tools for conveying ideas, brave souls still write books. Regardless of consolidation and other challenges that threaten the publishing world, like most industries, authors still choose this venerable medium to share their thoughts. And readers, with more choices than ever, still read books. Business books, in particular, are an odd lot; those attempting to capture the latest trends are often dead on arrival. But others possess value beyond the time and place in which they first appear. Here are 10 books that I read and reviewed in 2006 that could pass that test of time....

Authors are expected to market their books
Posted Monday, November 13, 2006 7:04:51 PM by Blog57 Team
It's not enough to write a great book. Authors are now expected to play an active role in book marketing and promotion. In this brave new world of always-on media, scribes are expected to either pursue or make themselves available to every potential reader. Though there have always been opportunities for interviews, reviews, in-store signings, book fairs, seminars and broadcast appearances, now publishers want to make sure no avenue for multimedia exposure is overlooked as a book competes with every other form of entertainment. Most book companies have full-time staff devoted to pursuing publicity for their books and authors, but nothing is guaranteed. ''Publicity departments are too small and stretched too thin,'' author Joseph Finder (High Crimes, Company Man, Paranoia) said in a telephone interview from his Boston office....

The public hearing by the Commission of Inquiry into the mismanagement at the Development Finance Corporation (D.F.C.) will not resume this week, or maybe even next week because Commission Chairman, David Price is not well. He has faced and overcome the pressures and frustrations of this inquiry with yoemanlike courage and perseverance. The whole country is grateful to him and wish him a speedy recovery. The hearing was suspended indefinitely after its last session on October 31 and now the Musa government has added to the pressures by making a pointed inquiry about the Chairmans health. Prime Minister Said Musa on Wednesday November 8, sent a letter to indisposed Price, asking if his health would allow him to continue the public hearing. The Peoples United Party (PUP) organisation had expressed strong opposition to David Price as the Chairman, accusing him of starting a political witch-hunt....

Books finding their niche in non-traditional places

Most customers at the Anthropologie stores come for the delicately woven knits and the ultrafeminine floral dresses. But these days at least some are coming for the books. Recently, the merchandise and books were coordinated with near-perfect precision. Resting beside a black sweater ($68) and a jet-black skirt with orange embellishments ($118) were copies of Annie Leibovitz's "A Photographer's Life: 1990-2005," big and black and gleaming, for $75. A pop-up book called "One Red Dot" echoed a display of polka-dotted canvas sneakers, while another title, "The Persistence of Yellow," perfectly matched a strategically positioned yellow knit sweater. Books are turning up in the oddest places these days. With book sales sagging -- down 2.6 percent as of August over the same period last year, according to the Association of American Publishers -- publishers are pushing their books into butcher shops, carwashes, cookware stores, cheese shops, even chi-chi clothing boutiques where high-end literary titles are used to amplify the elegant lifestyle they are trying to project....

Using online tools to read book consumers' interests

Books have long been made into movies. Now, they're heading straight to YouTube. Michael Connelly adapted the first chapter of his new murder mystery, "Echo Park," into a 10-minute film for YouTube and other online video sites in an attempt to attract new readers. Book publishers face the same challenge bedeviling all media: how to compete for attention in anentertainment market that includes TV, cable, forms like online social networks, downloadable music and video, podcasts and videogames. The average time Americans spend reading has declined from 117 hours a year in 1999 to about 105 in 2006. Meanwhile, some 172,000 books were published last year -- more than 19 new titles published for every hour of every day of every week. "The author and the publisher realizes there isn't just clutter in the marketplace, there is massive clutter in terms of competing with other books," said Albert N....

DIGITAL MUSIC: Apple's online iTunes store opens Latin section
Posted Saturday, November 04, 2006 3:28:37 PM by Blog57 Team
Apple Computer Inc. on Wednesday launched iTunes Latino, a dedicated area within its U.S. online store for Latin music, videos, audio books and podcasts. The iTunes store, the world's leading digital music outlet, with more than 1.5 billion songs sold since its launch, had previously included Latin as a music genre, but company officials said customers were asking for more Latin content. Offering a dedicated Latino section with a broader product mix also made sense given the nation's growing Hispanic population, of which more than half are Internet users, said Eddy Cue, Apple's vice president of iTunes. "It's a key opportunity that we were missing," said Cue, whose father is from Spain. The new section features different music genres, including regional Mexicano, baladas y boleros and pop Latino, as well as Spanish-language and bilingual TV shows under a new deal with NBC Universal's Telemundo, the nation's second-rated Spanish-speaking network....

Check It Out: More Books Please is Children's Book Week theme
Posted Thursday, November 02, 2006 3:07:45 PM by Blog57 Team
When libraries in all 50 states celebrate Children's Book Week later this month, its theme More Books, Please! will echo in Butte County where more than 20 percent of library users are 12 years or younger. During the week of Nov. 13-19, the branch libraries will celebrate with posters, story hours and craft sessions, bookmarks and the county's second annual puppet show by the Oregon-based, Dragon Theater. Puppeteers Shawna and Jason Ropp will entertain children in Paradise, Oroville and Chico libraries with their production of "Rumplestiltskin." The program is underwritten by Friends of the Library in those communities. In Butte County, Children's Book Week might better be called "Children's Book Year." Although the county has no certified children's librarian to coordinate the programs, most branches offer weekly story times and craft sessions for toddlers and preschoolers....
